The University of Pretoria Jacaranda Children’s Choir is “branching” out.   The “Seedlings”, a new choir for children from Grade 1 – Grade 3, is being established under the Choir Umbrella of the University of Pretoria. This choir is under the leadership of Elrika van der Merwe and Liesl Swanepoel.

The aim of “Seedlings” is to instil passion and an appreciation of music in children from a young age. Children will grasp the basics of sight reading, ear training and singing in a fun environment. We will base our training on the Kodaly method, so that from an early age we can equip our seedling choristers with the skills required to take music further should they so choose.

“Seedlings” will be an un-auditioned choir so any child may partake. The demand for such a group is high and we have limited space. Members will be chosen on a “first come first served” basis.

“Seedlings” will meet once a week on Wednesdays from 15:45 – 16:30 during school terms. Rehearsals will be at the Groenkloof University and will take place before the Jacaranda Children’s Choir rehearsal; in this way the “Seedlings” will get a glimpse of what they will grow towards. They will perform twice a year, at the annual Gala Concert of the Jacaranda Children’s Choir and at the Winter Concert Series held in the Aula at the University of Pretoria. This choir will not partake in any tours. The “Seedlings” project commenced in January 2015.
